Because it was fun. I put in more than one story of mine, and I also got Stephen King, Margaret Atwood, J.K. Rowling, Mark Twain, and Chuck Palahnuik. Hey, I'm just glad I didn't get Stephanie Meyer! :P

So, I just finished reading Brightly Woven, the debut fantasy novel from [info]bracken , and it is so amazing! I bought it on recommendation from [info]sjmaas and I couldn't have loved it more. The writing is so unique and descriptive, while the main characters, Sydelle and North, are so easy to fall in love with. Plus, their romance is so genuine and sweet - I just love it. Overall, it's a beautifully written fantasy novel with amazing plot twists and development. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves the fantasy genre. :)

The next book that I've started is Eyes Like Stars by [info]lisamantchev , which is the first in a trilogy. I have to say, coming from a theatrical background, I'm finding this novel so awesome and easy to relate to. The main character, Bertie, is so spunky and cool. Plus, there are real fairies, water spirits, pirates, and characters from all sort of stage shows. Not to mention the techies and stage and theatre managers. I haven't gotten extremely far in the book yet, but I really like what I'm reading. I would also recommend this novel so far. :)

What have you guys been reading so far?

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to complete Love's Status. It's really, really frustrating because, as I've said before, I know exactly where I want the story to go. but I just can't seem to find the right words to lay out the story. Argh, it's really, really annoying!

So, two of my friends have been kicked out of their homes. One of them is staying with me, while the other is staying with one of her family members. Any prayers or good vibes for them would be greatly appreciated. I can't imagine being kicked out by my mom. Of course, she's a wonderful mother and all around great person, so she would never do anything like that, but still, that's got to hurt something fierce. Just knowing that the person who gave you life didn't want to "deal with you" has to hurt. :/

You know what I'm missing? Legend of the Seeker. I really want there to be new episodes! Wah.

30 Day Movie Meme: Part Two

  • Jun. 10th, 2010 at 6:20 PM
ariel's freedom

Mkay, so I know it's been a while, but here's the second part of the 30 Day Movie Meme. Enjoy! :)

11. Favorite Black-and-White Film:

Paper Moon

Oh, how I love this movie! I first saw it on TCM or something of that nature, and I thought it was just so good. Of course, it was before Tatum and Ryan O'Neal got into drugs (boo), so the acting was superb. In fact, Tatum O'Neal won an Oscar for her role in Paper Moon, making her one of the youngest actors ever to win an Academy Award. Trivia aside, this movie is just so unique and sweet, and I enjoy watching it every time.

12. A Film That Permanently Altered Your Point-Of-View:

The Constant Gardener

I've always been really interested in the civil and personal rights of humans, animals, and nature. However, this movie opened my eyes up to causes that I hadn't really thought about. I knew that medications came from pharmeceutical companies, but I had never actually considered the reality of how those medications are tested, and who they are tested on. Sadly, this movie is not a complete work of fiction. After I saw this movie, I researched about medical testing, and there really are companies that test on poorer people in lesser-developed countries. To be honest, it makes me sick, and that is why I've started to follow and donate to organizations like Oxfam and Africare, among others. Sorry to get on a heavy subject, but I feel that it's an important one. However, I don't know if I would have become as involved with Oxfam and other charitable organizations as I am now if I had not seen this film.

13. A Guilty Pleasure:

Clue

What can I say? I love this movie! It's so funny, especially the last few scenes. Not to mention the alternate endings! Also, it has Madeline Kahn (who was also in Paper Moon), an actress that I adore. Anyway, this movie has awesome big band music, which I love. So yeah, Clue is definitely my guilty pleasure film. :)

14. A Film That You Hate:

Gigli

Gosh, I hate this movie. No, really. I hate this movie. Not only does it have Jennifer Lopez in it (ugh), the storyline and acting are totally unbelievable and boring. Luckily, I didn't pay to see this movie - I caught it on HBO or something like that. And you know what? There are some things you can't unsee, and this is one of them. If you're thinking about watching this movie - don't. Just...just don't. You'll hate it, guaranteed.

15. Favorite Film Sequel:

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

If I haven't mentioned how much I love the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, then shame on me, because I really love them. Seriously, if the fourth one turns out to suck, I'll be royally upset. But, that's beside the point. The point is, of course, how awesome this sequel is. The ending of Dead Man's Chest is so awesome. You honestly don't see it coming and it ensures that there will be a third film. Not to mention the epic fighting scenes, the music, the special effects, the acting, and, of course, Johnny Depp. Oh yeah, this sequel rocks.

16. Favorite Film Character:

Eliza Doolittle

I have loved My Fair Lady since I was a very little girl. I can't remember when I wasn't singing along to the movie or being awed by Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. Seriously, I knew who they were by age four or five while other kids were obsessing over Barney. Don't get me wrong, I loved Barney, but I loved My Fair Lady more. Anyway, Eliza Doolittle (who was originally portrayed on stage by Julie Andrews, another favorite of mine) is one of my absolute favorite characters of all time. Her transformation from a girl with low self-esteem and a somewhat sour-but-hopeful outlook on the world to a confident, kind, intelligent woman is inspiring. Her character development is fantastic. At first, she doesn't believe she can change, and doesn't entirely know if she wants to. Then, she doesn't feel as if her new life is right for her. But, it is when everybody congratulates Henry Higgins on his success of changing Eliza instead of congratulating Eliza herself that she realizes the amount of work that she has done, and what she has earned. She achieved the new, better life that she strived for, and even though she had help, she did it by herself. In the end, even Henry Higgins realizes this. Plus, she has a gorgeous singing voice (I know it was actually Marnie Nixon that sang all of the songs, but she's still part of the character). Also, I don't care what anyone says, Audrey Hepburn should have been nominated for an Oscar for that performance. But, anyway, I'm starting to ramble. My point is that I love Eliza Doolittle.

17. Favorite Film Quote:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Okay, so technically this is a quote by Alexander Pope, but it's in the movie, so I'm running with it:

"How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each prayer accepted, and each wish resigned."

It's gorgeous, you know?

18. The Best Overall Cast In A Film:

Doubt

Not only is this an amazing movie, the cast is brilliant. Even though it's small, this cast is simply astounding.

Meryl Streep
Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Amy Adams
Viola Davis

Oh, by the way - they were all nominated for Academy Awards. :D

19. The Most Hilarious Film You've Seen:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

This is hands-down the funniest movie I've ever seen. My mother introduced me to this film when I was very young - too young to understand all of the jokes, but I liked it anyway. However, as I grew and began to understand everything, I only loved it more. There are literally so many little and big jokes in this film that you find something new every time you watch it. I can't help but adore this movie.

20. A Moving (Emotional) Scene:

A.I.

The whole movie is beautiful and heartbreaking, but the ending takes the cake. It always makes me cry. :)

30 Day Movie Meme (that i stole)

  • May. 21st, 2010 at 5:55 PM
waiting

Yes, yes, I stole this meme from [info]fallenidol_453 and [info]lilypeters - it's a cool meme, leave me alone. :P

So, to save time, I'm going to post ten movies a day instead of one. So here it goes:

1. Favorite Foreign Language Film:

Run, Lola, Run

This is absolutely one of my favorite movies, as well as being my favorite foreign film. Creativity runs rampant through this film, and I love the mixture of black and white and color filming and animation. I've never seen another film that pulls all of those types of movies together. Plus, the storyline is exciting and unique. I love watching the different realities that come from each of Lola's choices. Plus, Franka Potente is amazing.

2. A Film That Is Underrated:

Kabluey

I only recently watched this movie, but I can honestly say that it is so easy to fall in love with. The premise is simple, but it has a lot of heart. The film itself is full of great comedic moments, and also full of moments that make you tear up. It's a great combination of drama and comedy - dramedy, which is my favorite genre. I really recommend this film to anyone who enjoys that genre, as well.

3. A Film That Brings You Unadulturated Happiness:

Finding Neverland

This film is one of my favorites. Seriously, the beauty, imagination, and heart of this movie is something that I connect to every time I watch it. The chemistry between Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet  is astounding. Their performances are so amazing and heartfelt. Although I want to cry every time I see this movie, I always leave it feeling happy overall.

4. A Film Cliche That You Love:

This cliche runs rampant in horror movies. One of the victims is looking in a mirror, then they open it to get something out of the medicine cabinet or turn away for a moment, and then they turn back or close the mirror, and *BAM* there's the reflection of the killer. Not exactly my favorite film cliche, but definitely a goodie-but-oldie. :P

For Example:

See what I mean?

5. Favorite Love Story In A Film:

Joel Barish and Clementine Kruczynski from The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I love a lot of relationships in films, but these two are hands down my favorite. They know that neither one of them is perfect, and they know that there's a possibility that their relationship may not work out, but they decide to stick it out anyway. They love each other so much that, despite all of their differences and separate issues, they want nothing more than to be together. That kind of love is irreplaceable.

I love them.

6. Favorite Actress:

Kate Winslet

This is probably obvious by now, but I adore Kate Winslet. She's my all-time favorite actress, closely followed by Meryl Streep. But still, Kate Winslet takes the cake. All of her performances are amazing, and I was so happy when she FINALLY won the Oscar that she so deserved. She brings a refreshing air to everything that she's involved with. You never see her in the tabloids because she recognizes the separation between her life and her work. I also love that she keeps her characters as real as possible, and doesn't force her body to be super duper skinny when she's naturally curvy. In fact, she embraces her body and seems completely comfortable in her own skin. Plus, her acting talent and abilities is beyond words. She truly becomes every character that she plays, and knows them inside out. I honestly think she's one of the most respectable people in the acting business.

7. The Most Surprising Plot Twist/Ending:

Dragonfly

Spoilers Follow:

This ending is the kind that can give The Sixth Sense a run for its money. If you haven't seen the movie and wish to do so without being spoiled, read no further. Anyway, when I first saw that the reason the main character's wife was haunting him was because of the baby that was still alive, I was blown away. Really, you totally forget that the woman is pregnant since you only see her belly at the beginning of the film. Throughout the entire movie, you wonder why the woman is haunting her husband, or if he is really crazy like everyone thinks. But when you find out it's because she wants him to save their baby...it just blows your mind. Very good ending, in my opinion.

8. The Best Opening/Closing Credits:

Opening Credits:

Zombieland

I have to agree with [info]fallenidol_453 on this one - the opening credits for this film are HILARIOUS. Seriously.

Closing Credits:

Sherlock Holmes

I love love love the music in this film, and coupling that with the amazing sketches and blothces? Brilliant.

9. The Best Soundtrack/Score To A Film:

TIE: Sherlock Holmes and The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I so love the soundtracks to these films. Sherlock Holmes satisfies my need for a more classical, steampunk-ish tune, while The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind gives me a more indie, lyrical score. If you have the time, listen to as much of the soundtracks as you can - they're amazing. :)

10. Favorite Documentary Film:

Jesus Camp

Don't get me wrong, I love God and Jesus very much. However, I often wonder why people do insane or horrible things in His name. From what most religions tell us, that's the opposite of what God wants. This documentary really explores the Evangelical lives of children of the United States. I must say, the ways that these kids are manipulated and forced into religion is kind of freaky. Yes, they should feel love for God and Jesus, but there is a thing called free will. Anyway, this documentary is one of my favorites.

So, there you have it. The first day of the 30 Day Movie Meme. :)

House Season Finale (Spoilers)

  • May. 17th, 2010 at 9:07 PM
selfless actions mulan

Did anyone else's heart just go numb? Seriously - that was one of the best but most heart-wrenching episodes ever. Yes, House and Cuddy are together (for how long, I wonder...) but the poor woman died after the excruciating pain of losing her leg! And when House knew that it could have ended differently. Man, I felt so bad for everyone.

I love how things like television shows, books, movies, music, etc. can make people feel so deeply. I mean...think about it. Even the slightest bit of music or preview of a movie can make you feel happy or sad or somewhere in between. That's exactly what this House episode did for me. Really, if you haven't seen it, check it out. You don't really need to know too much about the previous episodes to enjoy it.

WOOHOO! I'm on summer break! Seriously, this semester has been such a difficult one, and I'm glad it's over.  Although, now I have to find a job, and I have to say, it's really difficult, especially right now, what with the economy and all. But, I'll find something eventually. Also, I'm trying to find a spinning class to take. I've always wanted to try it and now that I have time, I think I might.

Another thing I'm looking forward to is finally working on Love's Status. I really want to finish it up so I can go back and basically re-write it. There's so much more information that I could add that could a) make it longer and b) make it SO much better. As of right now, there are just too many unanswered questions. So, I'm looking forward to finishing up Love's Status, basically. :D

OH, and one more thing, I really want Miss Julia of [info]fallenidol_453 fame to continue Close Your Eyes. Because I miss the story. ;)

Hello everyone! How are all of you doing?

I am SO happy that I'm on Spring Break, even though I have tons of work to do throughout the week. But still, it's nice not to have class. I'm also glad that I'm not going anywhere - I just want to relax.

So, I watched an episode of Legend of the Seeker - it was awesome! I really enjoyed it, and I'm recording the new episode today. Although, now I'm going to have to go back through all the other seasons on Hulu and catch up - I want to be in the loop! :P

Oh, and by the way, Happy Easter!

[EDIT]OH MY GOSH GUYS! My friend Sarah J. Maas just got the news that her book Queen Of Glass (which was on Fiction Press) is going to be published by Bloomsbury! Go check out her blog at http://sjmaas.livejournal.com![/EDIT]

I gave myself a henna tattoo today. It's still a light orange, bu it should fade to a darker maroon in the next few days. I've always loved henna tattoos - I think most of them are gorgeous. What's interesting is that they last for so long. I'm not quite positive what the ink is made out of. I believe it's some sort of plant. I do know that it's a long standing tradition in India to give out henna tattoos to family members and friends. I also think that brides get it done before their weddings.

I'm so caught up in this song by Sarah McLachlan right now. It's called 'Fallen'. The video has a pretty interesting part in it, too - they make it seem like she's singing underwater. Here's the video:

Isn't that just beautiful? It's the kind of song that makes you just want to run away to a deserted beach in a drizzle of rain. Or something. :P

A friend of mine is going through a really difficult time right now. His mother is mentally and emotionally abusive, and she wants to move him from place to place so he won't graduate high school. Now, I remember high school. It was tough enough for me without having a super insane home life. My mom and I keep suggesting that he come and live with us, but he seems kind of hesitant to do so. He thinks it will be adding stress to our lives, but it won't. We just want him to be in a safe environment. Any prayers to God or good vibes for him would be greatly appreciated. :)
